6 Reasons to Stay Hydrated:

Down here in Florida, most of us are prepared for the scorching heat that we experience throughout the year. However, many of us are still dehydrating our bodies–especially in the summer. Dehydration can occur very quickly during vigorous exercise. Intense diarrhea, vomiting, fever or excessive sweating are all signs of sever dehydration that calls for medical intervention. However, not drinking enough water during exercise or in hot weather even if you’re not exercising also may cause dehydration that you’re not even aware of. Below are Dr. Rosselli’s top 6 reasons to stay hydrated this summer.

1. Hydration Helps Prevent Dry Mouth

A cold glass of water is the best thirst quencher on a hot day. It can also help to keep your throat and lips moist and prevents your mouth from feeling dry. In addition to the discomfort that dry mouth can produce, it can also cause bad breath and/or an unpleasant taste–and can even promote cavities. Yes, cavities! (1).

2. Hydration Promotes Cardiovascular Health

When your body is dehydrated, your blood volume is lowered. When this happens, your heart must work harder to pump the reduced amount of blood and get enough oxygen to your cells. This makes everyday activities like walking up stairs, exercise, and even thinking more difficult.

3. Hydration Helps Muscles and Joints Work Better

When your body is properly hydrated, the water water inside and outside of your cells of contracting muscles provides adequate nutrients and removes waste efficiently so you perform better. Hydration is also important for lubricating your joints. When your muscle and joints work properly, your body maintains the energy it needs to exercise safely and more effectively. Side note: your body also needs proper vitamins and nutrients to perform well athletically. Our RECALIBRATE: Athletic Performance Treatment gives you all of the nutrients your body needs to perform your best on the golf course, in the waves, or at a crossfit session.

4. Hydration Keeps your Skin Glowing and Moisturized

When you are dehydrated, your skin is less elastic. The fact is that skin is an organ, and just like any other part of the body your skin is made up of cells. Skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, the organs will certainly not function properly or at their best. Dry, dehydrated skin is more prone to wrinkles and other skin irritations. Keeping your body hydrated is a great way to glow your skin and plump fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Hydration Keeps your Body Cool

Your body releases heat by expanding blood vessels close to the skin’s surface (this is why your face gets red during exercise), resulting in more blood flow and more heat dissipated into the air. When you’re dehydrated, however, it takes a higher environmental temperature to trigger blood vessels to widen, so you stay hotter. When you’re properly hydrated, your body stays nice and cool…even in this Florida heat.

6. Hydration helps cleanse your body — inside and out.

Number six is a big one, and this is why we’ve saved it for last. Your kidneys need water to filter waste from the blood and excrete it in urine. Keeping hydrated may also help prevent urinary tract infections and kidney stones. If you are severely dehydrated, your kidneys may stop working, causing toxins to build up in your body. Staying hydrated keeps your digestive system running optimally, which allows your bodies natural detox system to purge toxins from your body. It is the number one way to keep your body functioning its best.
